About the Role

The Opportunity

Our client is a growing and successful specialist contracting business entering an exciting period of transformation and continued growth.

They are looking to appoint an experienced SHEQ Manager to take ownership of the company's Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality performance, providing competent advice, leadership and practical support across the business.

This is a hands-on, operational role rather than a purely administrative or compliance position. The successful candidate will work closely with Directors, Project Managers, Designers, Site Managers, operatives, clients and main contractors to drive standards, improve systems and embed a positive culture of safety, quality and environmental responsibility.

The business currently employs 75+ direct employees, with approximately 250 subcontractors working on sites, and has a turnover of around £34m.

The Role

The SHEQ Manager will have responsibility for:

Health & Safety

Act as the company's competent H&S adviser, providing advice to Directors and operational management.

Take ownership of H&S performance, policies, procedures and continual improvement.

Undertake regular site inspections and SHEQ audits, ensuring actions are effectively closed out.

Review RAMS, risk assessments, COSHH assessments and project H&S requirements.

Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses and non-conformances, identifying root causes and corrective actions.

Ensure compliance with CDM, relevant legislation, client requirements and construction best practice.

Quality Assurance

Own and continually improve the Quality Management System and QAP processes.

Ensure project teams follow QAPs and maintain appropriate records and documentation.

Manage and host ISO 9001 and third-party audits, including corrective actions.

Monitor installation quality, inspection, testing, commissioning and handover documentation.

Review and improve procedures, forms and document-control systems.

Environmental

Take ownership of environmental performance and compliance.

Monitor waste, pollution prevention, environmental incidents, recycling and client/contract requirements.

Develop practical initiatives to improve environmental awareness and performance.

Competence & Training

Own the competence-management system, including training and competency matrices.

Ensure employees, managers and subcontractors are appropriately competent for the work they undertake.

Identify training and development requirements and coordinate appropriate upskilling.

Support toolbox talks, briefings, inductions and refresher training.

Maintain accurate, current and auditable competence records.

Operational & Cultural Leadership

Work closely with operational teams to improve SHEQ performance.

Provide practical support and challenge where standards are not being met.

Drive effective use of digital systems for SHEQ inspections, reporting and document compliance.

Promote a culture where SHEQ is an operational responsibility rather than simply a compliance function.

Work with Directors and Managers to ensure SHEQ remains a key business priority.

Client & Contractor Interface

Act as a senior SHEQ contact for clients, principal contractors and other stakeholders.

Support client audits, pre-qualification questionnaires, tenders and accreditation requirements.

Build strong relationships through professional and proactive SHEQ management.

Experience & Qualifications

Essential:

Minimum 5 years' SHEQ, H&S or Quality experience within construction, M&E, fire protection or specialist contracting.

Strong practical experience working across live construction sites.

NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent.

Good knowledge of UK construction H&S legislation, CDM and Building Safety requirements.

Experience with RAMS, site auditing, incident investigation and corrective actions.

Experience managing ISO and/or third-party audits.

Strong communication skills and the confidence to challenge both senior management and site personnel.

Desirable:

  • Fire sprinkler, fire protection or M&E experience.
  • ISO 9001 Internal Auditor qualification/experience.
  • ISO 14001 / ISO 45001 knowledge or auditing experience.
  • LPCB/LPS1048 experience.
  • IOSH membership.
  • Experience with Constructionline, CHAS, SafeContractor, Achilles or similar.
